Our Mission Through socially engaged early childhood education that prioritizes collaborative exploration, we grow a community of young children and their adults where there is empathy for all and connection to the natural world. Our work is anti-bias, anti-racist and nature-based. The school is a great space for antiracism work, and it keeps growing with the support of our community. We are going to do this work with you to propel us into continued forward momentum to build a place where every child belongs. Antiracism work begins with looking inward and understanding your biases. When discussing race with children the time is always now! Studies have shown that children start to notice race at 6-months-old. As we are doing our own work as adults to have the tools to acknowledge and provide counter messaging to our own biases, we can also work on modeling anti-racist action for our children and having direct conversations with them discussing their race, what is racism and how to be anti-racist. |

The Head of School (the “Head”) role is multifaceted. The school’s size and the close-knit environment, among the multiple constituencies, allow and require the Head to play many roles: instructional leader; the face of the school in the Houston and Montessori communities; the unifier of and cheerleader for the faculty; a warm, friendly presence among the student body and the parents; and, of course, the chief executive officer of the institution. Our school is located in the town of Catskill, New York, bordering the Hudson River, with magnificent mountain views. Inside a beautifully restored 1700’s Dutch barn situated on 50 acres of forests, fields, and streams, we have two fully equipped Montessori classrooms. In the Fall of 2020 we opened our doors serving early childhood (ages 3 to 6), and lower elementary (ages 6 to 9 years). During our second school year (2021 – 2022) we will expand to serve children ages 9 to 12 and, 1.5 – 3 (hopefully!). We envision a place of learning for children where the indoor classroom and the outdoor environment complement one another, with Montessori education for children and adolescents from 18 months to 18 years old, in a unique and beautiful permaculture farm setting, drawing inspiration from the ephemeral beauty of nature. Earth care, people care, and fair share, are permaculture ethics which guide the approach Catskill Montessori School has to being a part of the land. Students will learn observation of and working in cooperation with nature, and to honor those skills as the legacy and heritage of indigenous people all over our planet. |
