School Community
Our Mission
Through socially engaged early childhood education that prioritizes collaborative exploration, we grow a community of young children and their adults where there is empathy for all and connection to the natural world. Our work is anti-bias, anti-racist and nature-based. The school is a great space for antiracism work, and it keeps growing with the support of our community. We are going to do this work with you to propel us into continued forward momentum to build a place where every child belongs.

Antiracism work begins with looking inward and understanding your biases. When discussing race with children the time is always now! Studies have shown that children start to notice race at 6-months-old. As we are doing our own work as adults to have the tools to acknowledge and provide counter messaging to our own biases, we can also work on modeling anti-racist action for our children and having direct conversations with them discussing their race, what is racism and how to be anti-racist.

Westside Montessori School seeks a mission-driven leader who understands and respects WMS’s mission and core values while striving for excellence in all aspects of the school. The Head of School (the “Head”) role is multifaceted. The school’s size and the close-knit environment, among the multiple constituencies, allow and require the Head to play many roles: instructional leader; the face of the school in the Houston and Montessori communities; the unifier of and cheerleader for the faculty; a warm, friendly presence among the student body and the parents; and, of course, the chief executive officer of the institution.

The Head of School will oversee all daily school operations, including admissions, staff relations, and parent communication. WMS seeks a servant-leader who is confident yet humble and able to make fair but firm decisions. They must be approachable, kind, and visible in the school community. Generous with their time, the Head is expected to be present at most school functions and activities.

Upon stepping onto the campus at WMS, one finds an environment of cheerful, engaged students, committed faculty, and an overall sense of calm and peace. Faculty and administrators welcome the children in the morning at drop-off and see them off in the afternoon. “Grace and courtesy” are terms not simply mentioned in the school’s materials but lived out in daily interactions.

The Westside Montessori community is internationally diverse, and to complement a respectful school climate, WMS honors differences across ages, genders, religions, and cultural backgrounds. Parents describe an atmosphere consistent with the Montessori philosophy of honoring each individual. About MDS:

The Montessori Day School of Brooklyn began in 1977 as a drop-in program for working families of the YWCA on Atlantic Avenue in downtown Brooklyn, where it operated until 2003, when the PTA formed a nonprofit organization to operate MDS as an independent school. In 2010, MDS moved from two locations (on Washington Avenue and out of Grace Church in Park Slope) to our current happy home at 237 Park Place. While we serve families from many parts of Brooklyn, MDS has become part of the fabric of our Prospect Heights neighborhood.

6-12 Co-Teacher
Description of Position
Housed in a beautiful 1750s Dutch barn on a budding permaculture farm, Catskill Montessori School opened its doors in the fall of 2020.

We are a private, non-profit school inspired by permaculture ethics of people care, earth care, and fair share. We opened in fall 2020 with one early childhood 3-6 class and one 6-9 elementary class. Due to the level of interest, we are adding a new Montessori toddler community, an additional early childhood 3-6 class, and expanding our elementary program to include 6-12 for the fall of 2021.

We are seeking an elementary co-teacher to join our present 6-12 lead teacher.
Ideal candidates need to be MACTE-accredited with Montessori elementary experience. Farming, permaculture, or similar experience or interest is a big plus!

What we offer: competitive salary (commensurate with experience), health benefits, Montessori conference allowance, and tuition assistance for dependent children.

Catskill is equidistant from Boston and New York City (about two hours), with easy access to both. With many quaint towns nearby, including Hudson, with Amtrak service to NYC, Catskill offers the charm, culture, and environment of the farm and forest.

If you’re interested in joining our school community, please send over your resume and cover letter.

Catskill Montessori School is a private, non-profit school inspired by the permaculture ethics of people care, earth care, and fair share.

Our school is located in the town of Catskill, New York, bordering the Hudson River, with magnificent mountain views. Inside a beautifully restored 1700’s Dutch barn situated on 50 acres of forests, fields, and streams, we have two fully equipped Montessori classrooms.

In the Fall of 2020 we opened our doors serving early childhood (ages 3 to 6), and lower elementary (ages 6 to 9 years). During our second school year (2021 – 2022) we will expand to serve children ages 9 to 12 and, 1.5 – 3 (hopefully!).

We envision a place of learning for children where the indoor classroom and the outdoor environment complement one another, with Montessori education for children and adolescents from 18 months to 18 years old, in a unique and beautiful permaculture farm setting, drawing inspiration from the ephemeral beauty of nature.

 Competitive pay with great health and retirement benefits!
 Each guide will be supported by a full-time Montessori trained assistant who will also be provided interventionalist training and professional development.
 To ensure we can accommodate the breadth of needs presented by a stand-alone K, we have kept the student population in our classes low
 Grow professionally through support from a full-time Montessori Coach and over 30 days of dedicated high-quality personalized professional development and collaboration time.
 No requirement for dual roles: Guides will not be asked to teach remote and online classes.
 Grow your tool kit in meeting the needs of all learners through support from a full-time Special Educator hired and employed by PCM.

• Enjoy increased community diversity and international celebrations attributed to being a University town.
• Benefit from a multiplicity of resources with 2 major Universities within a 8-mile radius: libraries, museums, lab and greenhouse tours, science center, cultural center, performing arts center, jazz festival, farmers markets, community gardens, symphony, lentil festival, connected bike paths, and more.
• Enjoy access to great parks and outdoor recreation opportunities!
• Safe community with a low cost of living compared to much of Washington State.

PCM’s stand-alone Kindergarten (K) program
“It is necessary that the human personality should be prepared for the unforeseen, not only for the conditions that can be anticipated by prudence and foresight…Adaptability – this is the most essential quality.” (Maria Montessori, From Childhood to Adolescence, p. 61)
At our very core PCM believes that ALL students deserve an education that meets them where they are, respects the learners’ capabilities and natural tendencies, and fosters their growth academically, social-emotionally, and in life-skills development. We fiercely advocate that high-fidelity PUBLIC Montessori is the most EQUITABLE option to achieve this goal. While funding for early childhood education is limited in many states, we do not believe this should be a barrier to accessing a high-quality Montessori education. Data supports that, even with a stand-alone K program, high-fidelity Montessori provides better long-term results for learners. Thus, PCM has poised itself with a stand-alone K that can easily be expanded to a full primary program when funding becomes available. We are optimistic this opportunity will present itself in the future! To ensure we can accommodate the breadth of needs presented by a stand-alone K, we have kept the student population in our classes low while maintaining the 1:1 Montessori Guide to Assistant ratio; we have hired a full-time Montessori Coach; we have expanded our classroom materials to ensure we have Montessori works to address all levels in the primary classroom and we have carefully integrated key pre-reading and reading resources to help those students entering with no experience. To start strong PCM has forged strategic partnerships, including with National Center for Montessori in the Public Sector, Public Montessori in Action and Teton Science School Place Network. Join us to be the change you want to see in education!
